The Scania HPI system requires two modules to work together

The Scania HPI (High Pressure Injection) is the high-pressure injection technology developed by Scania itself for the DC12 and DC13 engines of the P/G/R/T series. Unlike common rail systems with a single ECU, the HPI system divides control into two obligatorily paired modules:

  • EMS S6 — electronic engine management (electronic side)
  • EDC S6 — HPI pump control (hydraulic side)

Both communicate via CAN and carry data linked to the same engine. Failure in either of them results in incorrect injection — severe power loss, excessive smoke, irregular idling, or inability to start.

ECM Tech Center works with diagnosis, repair, and remanufacturing of all Scania HPI system modules, including the EMS S6, EMS S6E, and EDC S6 variants.

⚠️ Warning: the replacement or repair of any HPI module must always include the evaluation of the partner module. Both are programmed with engine-linked data — incompatibility between them generates persistent failures.

Technical details — EMS S6 and EMS S6E

The EMS S6 is the electronic engine management module in the HPI system. Its function is to read engine sensors, calculate injection parameters, and send commands to the EDC S6 for precise activation of the injector units.

The most critical component of the EMS S6 is its BGA (Ball Grid Array) processor manufactured by TEMIC, with the calibration file stored in the internal memory of the processor itself. Any programming intervention requires specific equipment and a technician experienced in BGA.

Functions controlled by the EMS S6:

  • 6 HPI injector unit actuation channels (banks 1-2-3 and 4-5-6)
  • 2 independent rotation sensors — CKP 1 and CKP 2 (critical HPI redundancy)
  • Electromagnetic engine brake valve
  • CAN communication with other truck modules
  • Power supply, temperature, and protection circuits

The EMS S6E is the enhanced version of the EMS S6, maintaining the same HPI architecture and vehicle application, with hardware revision for better performance in specific engine versions.

Technical details — EDC S6

The EDC S6 controls the hydraulic side of the high-pressure HPI pump. For each of the 6 injector units, the EDC S6 actuates three types of valves:

  • Path valves — determine the fuel path within the injector unit
  • Timing valves — control the exact duration of the injection (precision in hundredths of a millisecond)
  • Shut-off valves — interrupt the injection

Any degradation in the actuation circuits directly impacts combustion quality — excessive smoke, power loss, or cylinder misfires.

⚠️ Compatibility — Vehicles with Scania HPI System

Series Engine System
Scania R 380 / R 420 / R 480 DC12 HPI EMS S6 + EDC S6
Scania P 380 / P 420 DC12 HPI EMS S6 + EDC S6
Scania G 380 / G 420 DC12 HPI EMS S6 + EDC S6
Scania T 380 / T 420 / T 480 DC12 HPI EMS S6 + EDC S6
Scania R 400 / R 440 DC13 HPI (some versions) EMS S6 + EDC S6
Scania P 400 / P 440 DC13 HPI (some versions) EMS S6 + EDC S6

Important: versions with XPI system (latest NTG) use EMS S8 or EMS S10. Pre-HPI versions (Series 4) use Bosch MS 6.2. If in doubt, send a photo of the module label via WhatsApp.

Before shipping, please provide: chassis number, photo of both module labels (EMS + EDC), truck model, year, and fault code.

Do you have a faulty EMS S6, EMS S6E, or EDC S6?

1. Contact and triage — inform Scania model, engine version, and the fault. If possible, describe the condition of both modules (EMS and EDC).

2. Module shipping — we arrange the details; you send it via postal service or carrier.

3. Bench diagnosis — for EMS S6/S6E: BGA processor, 6 HPI UI channels, two CKP circuits, engine brake, and CAN communication. For EDC S6: path, timing, and shut-off valve circuits of each UI and CAN communication.

4. Quotation — technical report for your approval. No repairs are performed without client approval.

5. Repair — intervention on the BGA processor (EMS) or replacement of valve circuits (EDC).

6. Final bench test — before return.

7. Shipping with warranty — module returns with fiscal documentation and a 90-day technical warranty.

📦 Average turnaround time: 10 to 20 business days. 🚚 We serve all of Brazil — local pickup and delivery in CE and PR.

Exchange Program — Remanufactured Module

Subject to availability, ECM Tech Center offers revised or remanufactured EMS S6, EMS S6E, and EDC S6 modules via an exchange program. The client sends the faulty module as part of the negotiation and receives a compatible, revised, and tested unit. Prior evaluation is mandatory before completing the exchange.

Warranty

Repaired or remanufactured modules come with a 90-day technical warranty from the date of receipt by the client. Before installation, check power supply, grounds, wiring harness, and the vehicle's CAN network.
