ECU TRW EMS2, EMS2.2, EMS2.3 and EMS2.4 / Lucas J1708 — Full Family | Volvo FH / FM / FMX | Repair and Remanufacturing
What is the TRW EMS2 ECU — and why it matters
The TRW EMS2 (Engine Management System 2) is the original electronic control unit for Volvo FH and FM trucks equipped with unit injector (UI) diesel engines. Manufactured by TRW/Lucas — now part of the ZF group — it was the standard engine management system for the Volvo generation preceding common rail, covering 7 to 16-liter engines on the D7, D9B, D12, D12D, D13A, and D16E platforms.
This ECU controls the individualized activation of each unit injector (UI), manages J1708 and J1939 diagnostic protocols, protects the engine against overvoltage and sensor failures, and communicates with the gearbox, brakes, and dashboard via the CAN network.
When it fails, the truck may exhibit anything from severe power loss and J1939 fault codes to a complete engine shutdown. ECM Tech Center specializes in technical repair and remanufacturing of this ECU, with an electronic bench, J1708/J1939 reading tools, and a formal 90-day warranty on all services.
Variant Comparison — EMS2 Family by Engine
| Feature | EMS2.2 — D12 / D12D Engine | EMS2.3 — D13A Engine | EMS2.3 — D16E Engine |
|---|---|---|---|
| EMS2 Subversion | EMS2.2 (V01 / V02 / V03) | EMS2.3 | EMS2.3 |
| Processor (CPU) | Motorola/Freescale MPC5554 | Freescale MPC5674F | Freescale MPC5674F |
| Engine | D12 / D12D — 12L, 6 cyl. | D13A — 13L, 6 cyl. | D16E — 16L, 6 cyl. |
| Injection system | Unit Injectors (UI) | Unit Injectors (UI) | Unit Injectors (UI) |
| Fuel supported | Diesel | Diesel and CNG (Methane) | Diesel |
| Calibration memory | PSOP (external to processor) | Integrated Flash | Integrated Flash |
| Voltage regulation | Dual (external + internal 24V→5V) | Single + dual CAN protection | Single |
| External communication | J1708 / J1939 | J1708 / J1939 | J1708 / J1939 |
| Internal network (chassis) | Single CAN | Dual CAN (CAN1 + CAN2) | CAN |
| Vehicles | FH12, NH12, FM12 | FH (gen. 2), FM, FMX | FH16 |
Critical point in D12/D12D variant: The PSOP memory can be written separately from the processor — it is the component most frequently affected by calibration failures. PSOP degradation results in a non-starting engine, power loss, or erratic UI behavior.
Critical point in D13A variant: The dual CAN architecture (CAN1 = engine / CAN2 = chassis and body) means that failures in the CAN interface circuits generate communication codes even without mechanical failure — often mistaken for automatic transmission or ABS problems.
EMS2 Subversions — Identification by Processor
The EMS2 family has gone through four distinct hardware generations. Knowing the subversion is essential for the bench technician to select the correct repair and reflash procedure:
| Subversion | Processor (CPU) | Main Feature | Typical Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| EMS2 (original) | Motorola MPC565 / MPC566 | Generation 1 — simpler architecture | D12 (first FH12) |
| EMS2.2 V01 / V02 / V03 | Motorola/Freescale MPC5554 | Separable PSOP memory; 3 layout revisions | D12D — FH12 gen. 2, NH12, FM12 |
| EMS2.3 | Freescale MPC5674F | Dual CAN; support for diesel and CNG (Methane) | D13A — FH gen.2, FM, FMX; also gas trucks |
| EMS2.4 | Freescale/NXP MPC5777C | Latest generation | Newer Volvo platforms — consult |
How to identify the subversion: The label on the physical module indicates the Volvo part number (e.g., 21900553). If in doubt, send a photo of the label via WhatsApp — our team will identify the subversion before shipping.
CNG / Methane: Volvo trucks with compressed natural gas (CNG) engines using the EMS2.3 platform are also supported. Please inform the fuel type when contacting us.

Common Symptoms and Failures — TRW EMS2 ECU
- Engine won't start or very difficult to start — frequent in the D12D variant due to PSOP degradation (calibration memory)
- Severe power loss + limp mode (derate) — failure in UI actuation drivers or voltage protection circuits
- J1939 fault code SPN 636 / SPN 723 — engine speed sensor (CKP) failure or reading interface failure within the ECU
- Communication failure with automatic transmission (I-Shift) or ABS — characteristic of the D13A variant, when CAN2 (chassis) interface circuits fail
- Engine enters emergency mode when heating up — internal voltage regulator (24V→5V) of the D12D variant with intermittent failure
- Individual injector failure (UI 1 to UI 6) — burnt power drivers for UI actuation
- ECU not communicating with the scanner — J1708 interface failure or main connector input protection failure
